Biography

Through accumulation and juxtaposition Voss explores urban as well as psychological landscapes. She has exhibited installations, performances, sculptures and drawings in the United Sates and abroad. Voss’s work has been included in such nationally recognized exhibitions as Urban Evidence: Contemporary Artists Reveal Cleveland or international exhibitions such as The Ninth International Shoebox Exhibition.  She created A Chaotic Symphony: The Catch-All Net for Urban Evidence, which consisted of three multi-media installations that were exhibited at each of the participating institutions: MOCA, Cleveland, the Cleveland Museum of Art and SPACES. Other multi-media installations include Everywhere is Here for NEO + ONE, and Fire and Embers, which was commissioned by the Akron Art Museum for the On-Site Ohio series. She has been the recipient of numerous commissions, grants and residencies, including several grants from the Ohio Arts Council. Two examples of artist-in-residence awards are FCCA Prague, the Czech Republic and the Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA. Recent exhibitions include Connections: Ohio Artists Abroad, Columbus, OH and the Massillon Museum’s Outdoor Sculpture. In addition, this past September, Voss completed a public art project in the Hyacinth neighborhood in Slavic Village, Cleveland. This project involved community participation during design and implementation to create sculptural mounds, gardens and benches. Currently she is developing new ideas and working on a private, outdoor sculpture commission.

Laila Voss has been adjunct and full-time faculty at several colleges and universities in the Northeast Ohio region as well as directing a couple of department galleries. Since the 2003 she has been an assistant lecturer at the University of Akron Myers School of Art. Besides exhibiting work, Laila Voss actively participates in the visual culture of the Cleveland area by presenting lectures and participating in panels. Additionally, she is also a board member of SPACES and has acted in an advisory capacity to other organizations such as Zygote Press and the Sculpture Center. She graduated from Ohio University with a BFA and received her MFA from Kent State University.
